If AI Isn’t Intelligent, Are We?

The claim that “what AI can do is not real intelligence” sounds decisive, but it quietly commits to a much stronger—and less comfortable—position. If the benchmark for “real intelligence” excludes tasks that large models perform well, then many everyday human activities fall into the same excluded category. Pattern recognition, language completion, routine reasoning, even a fair share of problem-solving—these are things humans do constantly, often automatically, and often without deep understanding. If those don’t count as intelligence when machines do them, it becomes harder to insist they count when humans do them.

This creates an awkward asymmetry. Critics frequently rely on an implicit definition of intelligence that shifts depending on the subject. When humans perform a task, it is framed as evidence of cognition, intuition, or experience. When an AI performs the same task, it is dismissed as statistical mimicry. But the output alone doesn’t justify such a sharp distinction. If the observable behavior is comparable, the burden of proof lies with those who want to deny equivalence, not assume it.

One uncomfortable implication is that much of what we take pride in as “intelligent behavior” may be more mechanical than we like to admit. Humans rely heavily on learned patterns, heuristics, and shortcuts. We autocomplete sentences in conversation, anticipate outcomes based on past experience, and make decisions with limited reflection. These are not flaws—they are efficient adaptations—but they blur the line between “deep intelligence” and “fast pattern matching.” The more we emphasize that AI is “just pattern matching,” the more we risk revealing that a large portion of human cognition operates the same way.

This doesn’t mean humans and AI are identical. Humans bring embodiment, long-term goals, emotional grounding, and a capacity for self-reflection that current systems only approximate. But critics often overcorrect by dismissing everything AI does as trivial, which ends up trivializing a surprising amount of human cognition as collateral damage.

There’s also a social dimension to this debate. Declaring AI outputs as “not real intelligence” can function as a form of status protection. It preserves a boundary: humans remain uniquely intelligent, machines remain tools. But if that boundary is defended by redefining intelligence rather than examining capabilities, it starts to look less like a principled stance and more like a moving target. Each time AI reaches a new domain—chess, translation, coding, writing—the definition of “real intelligence” retreats further into areas not yet automated.

A more constructive approach would be to treat intelligence as a spectrum of capabilities rather than a binary category. On such a spectrum, both humans and AI systems occupy overlapping but distinct regions. This avoids the need for dismissive arguments and allows for a more honest comparison of strengths and limitations.

The reverse conclusion, then, is not that humans are “less intelligent,” but that intelligence itself is less mystical and more distributed across different processes than we often assume. Recognizing this doesn’t diminish human value; it refines our understanding of it. And it gently challenges those who dismiss AI too quickly to clarify whether they are defending a concept of intelligence—or just their place at the top of it.
